After two year of work, the digiKam team is proud to announce the final release of digiKam Software Collection 5.0.0. This main version introduces a new cycle of releases, which will be shortly released to quickly include all the fixes reported by end users.

This release marks almost complete port of the application to Qt5. All Qt4/KDE4 code has been removed and many parts have been re-written, reviewed, and tested. Porting to Qt5 required a lot of work, as many important APIs had to be changed or replaced by new ones.

A new release of digiKam Recipes is ready for your reading pleasure. This version introduces the Basic Concepts Explained appendix that covers key terms and concepts used in digiKam. Currently, the appendix contains information about chroma subsampling, cor (bit) depth, hue, saturation, brightness, and vibrance. I plan to gradually expand the appendix with time.

digiKam team is proud to announce the release of digiKam Software Collection 5.0.0 beta3. This version is new stage to the long way to stabilize code of Qt5 port of next main digiKam release. See previous announcement about 5.0.0-beta2 release to know all details about code re-writing under progress.

As usual, with this new release, we have introduced a lots of bug fixes compared to previous one, but not only. A new 3DLut tool have been included to Image Editor and Batch Queue Manager. 3D lookup tables are used to map one color space to another. With this king of tool, you will be able to apply nice color effects over images, as vintage, over satured, or high contrast photo.

digiKam Explained: Chroma Subsampling

When configuring saving settings for the JPEG format in the Saving Images section of the Configure digiKam window, you can choose between medium and high chroma subsampling, or disable it altogether.

But what is chroma subsampling and what does it do? As you may know, JPEG is a lossy format, which means that it trades quality for a smaller size. One of the methods for achieving a smaller size is to store color information (chroma) at a lower resolution than brightness (a.k.a intensity or luma) data. This is possible due to the fact that the human eye is less sensitive to color than brightness, so discarding color information doesn't produce a perceptible loss of quality.
