digiKam 0.10.0-beta6 release for KDE4

by digiKam

Dear all digiKam fans and users!

The digiKam development team is happy to release the 6th beta release dedicated to KDE4. The digiKam tarball can be downloaded from SourceForge.

digiKam is now compilable under Windows using MinGW and Microsoft Visual C++. Precompiled packages are available with KDE-Windows installer. See KDE-Windows project for details.

To compile digiKam for KDE4, you need libkexiv2, libkdcraw, and libkipi for KDE4. These libraries are now included in KDE core but for the moment, digiKam require libkdcraw and libkexiv2 from svn trunk to compile fine (These versions of libraries will be released with KDE 4.2). To extract libraries source code from svn, look at bottom of this page for details

For others depencies, consult the README file. There are also optional depencies to enable some new features as lensfun for lens auto-correction, and marble for geolocation.

Hei Gilles, I have one

Hei Gilles, I have one question for you.

Why do all your posts come with a windows picture, are you not happy with a free-software OS?

You know what, I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but whenever I see post after post with only windows pictures on it I just get an urge not to use digikam again.

I don't want to stop using digikam, because I think you make one fine piece of software, but could you please hold off on the windows pictures!

Thank you

What are you talking about?

What are you talking about? Digikam is a really nice piece of software and is part of KDE, it even has a K in the name. He is showing windows pictures to prove that now it also runs in windows. Take it easy, it's only an operating system, it's not a religion.

Absolutly...

I can't said more....

digiKam

But, but, but ... ! it looks

But, but, but ... !
it looks much cooler in KDE of course :)

Do not fear that Windows NT

Do not fear that Windows NT is going to go over of Linux as main OS.

If you look the Poll, the Linux is most important platform for users than Windows or Mac OS X together. And even that poll would be only a 10% for Linux, the main development would be there. Because digiKam is desgined to use KDE technologies and it maintain such tools for KDE community too.

I do not mind about those screenshots, even that it "is a shock" but it is just a screenshot of proof that digiKam will come to other platforms too than just Linux.

On future (and on past) we should not fear to show the screenshots taken on the other OS's than Linux or not even on other Linux OS distributions than what watcher is using.

digiKam is not only a "leading" photo management application on Linux OS and it's competitors ain't anymore just a F-spot, Kphotoalbum etc.. but on Windows system the Picasa, ACDsee, Lightroom, Photoshop Elements, Bridge... and on Mac OS X system a Aperture, iPhoto, Lightroom...

We need to have screenshots digiKam running on those platforms too when it is possible and give a users a new choise for their photo's management.

If you have the urge to stop

If you have the urge to stop using a great free software program because its main developer is using it for whatever reason (imo not really something you should care about) on an OS that you do not like well than go on and be happy with your religion.

Personally I think it is fantastic that more and more of the KDE programs are running under Windows. That way I can offer the people that _can not_ use Linux (programs like eg AutoCAD) great free software programs. And these that do not _want to_ switch for whatever reason can be introduced to even more free software instead of using some tools illegaly.

I eg. was often testing Linux, but I only switched the moment than most programs I used under Windows were free software and available under Linux, that was a very easy migration.

and once they use many great

and once they use many great programs for free on windows, they can one day switch to linux and there will be no difference left.

Interesting exercise: port KDE to windows. :-)

Ok, I was misunderstood. Of

Ok, I was misunderstood.

Of course I was already expecting it.

Although I have mixed feelings about kde on proprietary OSs, I do appreciate how great it is to be able to use KDE software anywhere you want to.

That said, I was quite happy when you posted the first post with a windows picture.

My complaint is, and please don't take it personally, that since then, You've Only displayed windows screenshots, and there've been how many posts with screenshots? quite a few han? So where's the diversity? It's like you're totally focused on windows and that gives digikam a bad image, the way I see it. All I would like to ask you is to please spread the wealth around and show other sreenshots besides windows, is that so much to ask?

I think you understand, if you read this comment merely rationally,

thank you, and once again thank you for a great piece of software

First of all I think using

First of all I think using the word "rationally" is a mistake. I guess you think that it's rational if I accept (agree to) your opinion the way you presented it. But as it is an _opinion_ it is very likely that it is not (totally) rational. ;)

Second thing is: If you already expected to be "misunderstood" then why did you post your opinion the way you did? Imo that is just some kind of unnecessary provoking.

What about just 'asking' "Hey, I really like your product [do you?] and I wondered if you are using Windows right now. You know all the windows screens recently. Is it working the same way as on Linux?" :P

my bug

Sorry for not posting for some time, I had been in seriously bad health recently.
I will get a current trunk and try to update and polish my patch in the next days. As nobody seems to be interested in this bug or just lives with it I guess I have to somehow fix it myself.
I will switch to a non-stupid isp on dec 6 and will open a proper bug on bugs.kde.org

It seems someone has reported

It seems someone has reported this bug almost one and a half year ago at
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=146097 and it is still unconfirmed. When I finally
get to the bugtracker I will confirm it, so it gets squashed.
